VOLUME III: AUCKLAND JEWRY INTO THE 21ST CENTURY

RENAISSANCE PUBLISHING, 2020

Produced to mark the 150th anniversary of the Wellington Hebrew Congregation in 1993, the first thing that stands out about A Standard for the People is its unusual format: a 34 by 24.5 by 3.5 cm hardcover colossus. It was compiled by well-known academic Stephen Levine, who opted for a community anthology, in which numerous members collaborated to create an intricate portrait of their congregation’s family histories, and of their dynamic contributions to the broader community, in addition to their own. Adorned with a painting by renowned late New Zealand artist Don Binney showing the synagogue that once stood on The Terrace, A Standard for the People is one of the more unique portraits of an ethnic and religious community to be produced in Aotearoa-New Zealand.
